MRCC Café
West Caldwell, NJ

Mountain Ridge Country Club erected a spectacular Moorish-revival club house on their handsome property in the 1920’s. Their board commissioned us to design a new cafe and locker room adjacent to their swimming pool in a style compatible with the club house. It would replace a non-descript existing structure with one made of naturally durable materials like wood and masonry. As a seasonal shelter, the design focused on energy conservation and minimal maintenance. The kitchen and restrooms are located underground to take advantage of the naturally cool temperature of the earth. The café, with its high roof, ceiling fans, skylights and large, operable windows offer abundant natural light and ventilation.

National Gay & Lesbian Task Force
New York, NY

NGLTF is a national political advocacy group, with regional offices in Lower Manhattan. This was the second 5,000 square foot build-out for the group in one year (their original lease was bought out for a residential conversion). The layout was designed to accommodate several internal working groups, and establishes a clear circulation path from entry to office and the large conference room. Spatial definition is enhanced through the use of vivid color.

Reade Street Animal Hospital
New York, NY

A young veterinary practice sought to open an animal hospital in Lower Manhattan. Located on the ground floor of a typical Tribeca loft building, the space had been a high-end shoe store. Our challenge was to establish a strong visual connection to the street, maintain the historic context, efficiently support the medical staff, establish an acoustic separation from tenants above, and design provide comfort to patients, and clients. By creating a clear separation of public and private spaces, Leo J. Blackman Architects was able to link the reception and waiting area via large storefront windows to the street. The cheerful day-lit environment calms pets & owners while drawing in new customers. The custom furnishings, materials, and color selections add character unusual in a medical office.
